A 42-year-old woman from Kandivali has filed a police complaint against her two brothers that they allegedly spiked the drinks of her son and daughter-in-law and then tried to kidnap the latter. The complainant said that her brothers were against her son’s marriage as the daughter-in-law was a bargirl.
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against her two men, who have claimed that their 23-year-old nephew’s wife was from a different caste and they opposed that.
According to the Charkop police, the complainant — a native of Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district — lives with her son, daughter-in-law, and daughter in Kandivali’s Ekta Nagar. Another person from her village, S R Bediya, is the complainant’s neighbour in Mumbai. He has five sisters who work as bargirls. One of Bediya’s sisters and the complainant’s son loved each other and got married at a Bandra court when Bediya had gone to his hometown for 20 days. Since then, Bediya — who opposes the marriage — has been threatening the duo of dire consequences, the complainant mentioned in the FIR.
On Monday (October 23), the complainant’s two brothers — Harpalsing Bediya and Asarsingh Bediya — came to Mumbai from their hometown and visited the complainant’s residence on October 24 night.

“My brothers offered cold drinks to my son and daughter-in-law, and later, one of them told my daughter-in-law that ‘she should not have married their nephew’ as ‘people from her caste do not marry’. This led to an argument, and my brothers forcefully tried to take my daughter-in-law out of the house,” said the complainant, who was also at home then. Later, the complainant and a friend of her son — who was visiting them — intervened in the matter, and the accused left the house. After a while, the complainant’s son and daughter-in-law lost consciousness, she said in the FIR, adding that that is when she realised that “her brothers had spiked the couple’s drink and were planning to kidnap the daughter-in-law”.
An FIR has been registered against Harpalsing and Asarsingh under Indian Penal Code sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc.), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment…), and 34 (a criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention) at the Charkop police station.
A search is underway to nab the accused at the earliest, said a police officer.
