Two men arrested for duping women: Promised them gifts, got them to pay custom charges, say police | Delhi News

The Delhi Police has arrested two persons who allegedly posed as Navy officers, doctors, or engineers and cheated several women by promising to send them gifts and getting them to pay customs charges for the said items. The gifts, however, never materialised.

DCP (Dwarka) Harsh Vardhan said on October 25, a woman lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Dwarka, alleging that she received a request from an unknown Instagram ID. When she accepted, the person introduced himself as a sea engineer from Norway.

A few months later, the person also proposed marriage to the complainant and said he wanted to send her gifts and Euros from Norway. But to receive these, he said the woman would have to pay customs clearance charges.

“Further, the accused person asked the complainant to pay for his air tickets to India. She sent him Rs 11,39,000 to various bank accounts,” the DCP said.

A police team was formed and during investigation, details of the beneficiary’s bank account were obtained. “On the basis of technical surveillance and analysis of details of the alleged account, the suspect was located in Chandra Vihar. The receiver of the stolen money, Sunder Singh (22), a resident of Nilothi Extension in West Delhi, was arrested,” the DCP added.

During questioning, the arrested accused, who runs a grocery shop, said he would receive the cheated amount in his bank accounts, deduct his commission of around 10%, and give the rest to his partner, a Nigerian national, in cash.

Police laid a trap near Singh’s grocery store and arrested the co-accused, Harmony Samuel (27). “The sea engineer’s pictures which he had shared were found on his mobile phone,” said an officer.

Samuel used to allegedly operate several fake Instagram accounts and cheat innocent women regularly. “After gaining their trust, he would propose marriage and send gifts and parcels to any airport in India. He would then ask the women to pay the custom clearance charges to different bank accounts,” an officer said.
