Two persons, both brothers, have been arrested in Navi Mumbai for allegedly duping a 35-year-old woman to the tune of Rs 62 lakh after one of them met her on a matrimonial site. The accused have duped several other women and would splurge the money in dance bars, police said Saturday.

The Rabale MIDC police identified the accused as Omkar Patekar (36) and Bhushan (43). Omkar allegedly told the woman, who trains air hostesses, that he held a high position in a nationalised bank.

According to police, it was in August 2022 that Omkar approached her on Jeevansathi.com. “They started talking to each other. Omkar claimed that he wanted to marry her and as her response was positive, he started asking her for money,” said an officer. “The accused took money under various pretences. Once he told her that he was buying a house for them, while on another occasion he claimed that he needed money for some medical purposes.”

On a few occasions, Bhushan also contacted the woman, claiming that his younger brother had asked him to contact her and collect the money.

As per the complaint, the woman ended up giving Rs 62 lakh. She got suspicious only when Omkar started avoiding conversations about their marriage. As she started asking for her money back, Omkar stopped responding to her calls and messages.

She then approached police and they registered a case of cheating on May 8.

Police analysed Omkar’s call data records and came to know that the duo were staying in Kalwa. “When we went to the address we came to know that only their mother stays there and the two brothers occasionally visit her,” an officer said.

The duo kept changing their mobile phones, SIM cards and locations, according to police. “We got some details from their mother and came to know that they were in a bar at Rabale,” the officer said.

The accused are school dropouts. “They have duped several women but we are trying to ascertain the exact number of women whom they approached through matrimonial websites and duped. We have come across one woman but she does not want to lodge a complaint against them,” said the officer.
