There was confusion over the enforcement of new petrol rates in the city. While most petrol pumps started charging the new rate of Rs 6.09 a litre, quite a few were still selling their existing stock at the old price of Rs 5.99.

Three missiles fired by Soviet fighters brought down the South Korean Airlines jumbo jet carrying 269 people which disappeared the day before, the Kyodo news agency reported. Kyodo said the radio conversations between Soviet fighter pilots took place seconds before the New York-Seoul flight vanished from the radar screens.

The Soviet Union said that an “unidentified aircraft” twice violated Soviet airspace and Soviet fighters “were sent aloft” to try to help it land. A brief Tass report said: “An unidentified plane entered the airspace of the Soviet Union over the Kamchatka peninsula from the direction of the Pacific Ocean and then for the second time violated the airspace of the USSR… The plane did not have navigational lights, did not respond to queries…”
