Fourteen years after he escaped from prison, the Vadodara Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Thursday arrested a man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the abduction, rape and murder of a minor girl at Silvassa in 2004.

Sundarsinh Bhuresinh Rajput, a native of Alamgir village at Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the parole and furlough squad of the Vadodara Crime Branch.

According to a DCB statement, Rajput had escaped while on a 35-day furlough granted to him in December 2008. “The convict had escaped after being granted furlough on December 4, 2008 and was to report to the prison on January 9, 2009… However, he spent his furlough at his native village and thereafter was on the run in New Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Ahmedabad and Mehsana and worked as a labourer involved in cutting structural reinforcement bars at construction sites, he has said in his primary questioning… He also married while he was on the run and has a son from the marriage.”

The DCB added that it had used human and technical intelligence to track down Rajput, against whom the Vadodara Central Jail had filed a complaint at Raopura police station in January 2009 when he failed to turn up after his furlough.

The statement said, “We received an input that Rajput had been working at a construction site in Kadi in Mehsana. Thereafter, we conducted a physical search of many construction sites in Mehsana and tracked down Rajput.”

A team headed by Crime Branch Sub-Inspector J K Vasava tracked down Rajput, who has now been handed over to the Vadodara Central Jail.
