Air travellers often buy confectioneries or essential items from stores at airports. However, it was a matrimonial website’s store that greeted a woman at Chennai International Airport.
The woman posted on X, formerly Twitter, a photo of a store of Elite Matrimony, a matrimonial website catering to high net-worth individuals. She found it peculiar that the airport that “does not have a pharmacy or a convenience store” has got a matrimonial store.
“Lol, MAA airport doesn’t have pharmacy/a convenience store in case of emergencies but look what I found,” the woman wrote.

At Elite Matrimony, packages start at Rs 1,50,000 and go all the way up to Rs 3,00,000.
“$35B dollar industry – growing even more rapidly as India plays more status games,” an X user commented. “It must be targeted towards people who think “I have a 2 hour layover, let me find a life partner in that time,”” said another. “Never understood the need for so many luggage shops in an airport in the secure area, where you have basically gotten rid of your bags… this is worse than that…” a third user wrote.
“We’re a marriage-obsessed country. A lot of things in our country and society are centred around marriages,” another netizen posted. “When it comes to shopping at the airport, you come across many luxury brands. They primarily cater to business-class customers. Another reason is that the presence of a brand in an airport helps expand its marketing reach due to lakhs of visitors passing through in a single day,” yet another user wrote.
