Shinde Chhatri, the resting place of Maratha leader Mahadji Shinde in Wanwadi, is undergoing restoration, which will take about a month-and-a-half to complete but the facility will remain open for visitors. “The heritage structure was restored in parts 15 years ago. For the first time, complete restoration work is being taken up,” said Yashvant Bhosale, Maharashtra superintendent of Scindia Devasthan Trust.

Over the years, holes have developed on the roof of the resting place, due to which water leakages occur during rains. Moss has gathered on stones and there is overgrowth in the building. The walls have also developed cracks.

Bhosale said they are restoring everything — from the slab to the doors, windows and also walls. The Scindia Devasthan Trust, which is responsible for the maintenance of the resting place, is looking after the restoration work.

Contractor for the project Sudham Radhakrishna Nalawade from Shree Enterprises Heritage Care said, “We are restoring the entire temple, while maintaining the old design.” He said that the temple has 67 kalash, which have developed a rusty black layer.

The Shinde Chhatri was built in the 18th century. In 1974, Mahadji Shinde decided to build a Shiva temple but did not live to see the structure and died the same year. After his last rites, memorial was built for him and was completed by Madhavrao Scindia of Gwalior in 1965.
